2009 Challenge Quilt Ideas Abound

Need ideas for this year's theme, "The Universide of Quilts: Yours to Discover"? NASA is a government agency so many of their published photos are in the public domain. Browse image galleries simply by searching the web for "NASA photos."

Find millions of freely licensed and public domain images on Wikimedia Commons, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page. This is a media repository maintained by the same organization that publishes Wikipedia. For instance, you'll find stars and planets in the Astronomy category, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Astronomy. See plants and animals, classic works of art, loandmarks and landscapes from all over the world just by typing in a search term. You'll be amazed at the ideas you find! Or, click the Random File link in the left column and see what ideas find you.

Also, the NASA website has a "photo of the day" where you can see images of everything space-related. http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html.

I know I'm going to have a lot of fun with this year's quilt challenge quilt!

Celestial Bodies: 2009 Challenge Quilt Theme

A few guidelines to peak your interest...

  • Use three black-and-white challenge fabrics from the kit.
  • Add three additional fabrics, from the primary and secondary colors (that's red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple).
  • Show a celestial body of some sort (see above resources for ideas, if desired).
  • Embellish with anything including pearls.
  • Dimensions: Between 130" and 160" total perimeter measurement.
  • Deadline: First, submit an entry form due at the January 12 meeting. Deliver finished quilt to the Fair Grounds by 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 20, 2009.
