2022 Opportunity Quilt

At The Beach

2022 Opportunity Quilt

The 2022 Opportunity Quilt was won by Gayle Ross of Corralitos, CA.

Inspired by a ‘beach cottage’ quilt that she had seen, PVQA member Cara Lamb came up with the idea for the 2022 Opportunity Quilt. She particularly like the blue and sand color scheme of the quilt that inspired her and wanted a participatory quilt, where a lot of PVQA members could contribute.

She drafted a block pattern, with the help of Nancy Hanson and Betty Whitman and Betty created a design for the quilt as a whole. They tested the block pattern and instructions and made a few changes.

They then created packets for guild members, containing the sand background fabric and the instructions. But knowing the tremendous creativity of the PVQA guild, members were given permission to alter the pattern, provided that they used the background fabric and their resulting block was the right size. In addition several members who do lovely applique were asked to put something beach-related on a plain block.

Well, of course the guild members came through, big time! More blocks than expected were turned in. When Betty assembled the quilt, she added an extra row to the original quilt design.

Jeff Yasenchok had offered to quilt the quilt when they first began, and he did so, adding bits of glitter for fun.

The quilt is 72″ x 90″.
